When to Repair vs Replace Your Windshield
January 15, 20245 min read

Not sure if your windshield needs a repair or full replacement? This guide breaks down exactly what factors determine the right choice — and how to avoid paying more than you need to.
The Basic Rule: Size and Location
Chips smaller than a quarter and cracks under 6 inches long can typically be repaired. Larger damage, or damage in the driver's primary line of sight, usually requires replacement. Location matters as much as size — a small chip directly in front of the driver may still require replacement for safety reasons.
When Repair Is the Right Choice
- Single chip smaller than a quarter
- Crack under 6 inches
- Damage away from the driver's direct line of sight
- No damage to the inner layer of the glass
- No contamination (dirt, moisture) in the crack
When Replacement Is Necessary
- Crack longer than 6 inches
- Multiple chips or cracks
- Damage at the edge of the windshield (weakens the frame)
- Damage directly in front of the driver
- Damage to the inner glass layer or defroster grid
